Engage 2 at the European Researchers’ Night 2024

We are happy to announce that the Engage 2 project will participate in the upcoming edition of the European Researchers’ Night, taking place in the beautiful setting of Piazza Unità, Trieste. This event, a major celebration of science and research, will be held on the 27th of September 2024.

Organised by our partner, the University of Trieste with the contribution of the Coordinator Deep Blue, this engaging activity, titled “Uno sguardo al cielo: ma quanto è complesso il trasporto aereo europeo?” (A look at the sky: How complex is European air transport?), will bring the world of air traffic management closer to the public.

Through a fun and interactive map-based game, participants will understand the immense scale and complexity of European air transport, as well as the numerous challenges it faces, from environmental impact to connectivity, especially given the daily surge of aircraft across European skies.

This activity will demonstrate how research is essential in designing a more sustainable air traffic system, both environmentally and economically. The activity will be conducted in Italian, making it accessible to the local community and ensuring a broader engagement.

Join Engage 2 at SESAR Innovation Days 2024!

First plenary meeting of Engage 2 in Vienna

The Engage 2 project successfully held its first plenary meeting in Vienna on 4-5 June. Hosted by Frequentis, the meeting was fully attended by all consortium partners. This event provided an important opportunity to review the achievements of the first year of the project.

The meeting provided an opportunity to take stock of the project’s first year, highlighting the numerous initiatives that have been successfully completed. These include the launch of the first Call for Catalyst project funding and the PhD funding call. The partners also reviewed the results of various surveys conducted in recent months among industry stakeholders and academic representatives, expecially the insights gathered thanks to the open science survey in the ATM sector.

A key focus of the meeting was laying the groundwork for upcoming activities. The most imminent of these is the first Summer School, which will be held in Belgrade from September 9-13. Additionally, Engage 2’s involvement in the upcoming SESAR Innovation Days, which will take place in Rome from November 12-15, was discussed.

These discussions and planning sessions are crucial for ensuring the continued success and impact of the Engage 2 project as it moves into its next phases.

Engage 2 supports SESAR Young Scientist Award 2024

The ATM industry is facing a number of challenges, such as increasing traffic demand, environmental concerns, and the need for more efficient and safe operations. Young scientists are playing a key role in developing innovative solutions to these challenges and the SESAR Young Scientist Award is a great opportunity for them to showcase their work and receive recognition for their achievements. We encourage all eligible young scientists to apply.

The 2024 edition of the award has widened its scope from previous years and is now open to two categories: 

  • PhD scientists with the chance to receive a prize of EUR 10 000 
  • Undergraduate or Master students with the chance to win a prize of EUR 5 000

About the SESAR Young Scientist Award

The SESAR Young Scientist Award is an annual award that is open to PhD students and Master’s students from around the world. The award recognizes outstanding research in the field of ATM. Winners receive a cash prize and the opportunity to present their work at a major ATM conference.

Engage 2 shares its survey on “Open Data and Science for ATM”

Rome, March 20th 2024 – In a bid to enhance collaboration between industry and academia within Air Traffic Management research, Engage 2 has launched a survey focusing on “Open Data and Science for ATM. The initiative highlights the important role of open science in driving European performance gains and growth in the field.

The survey is available here.

The survey, designed to gather insights from various stakeholders including industry professionals, aviation academics, students and policymakers, delves into three key areas: open data requirements, reproducibility and the formation of an open science alliance for ATM. Participating in the survey, which takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, provides an opportunity for stakeholders to contribute to the advancement of the field.

Engage 2 emphasizes the benefits of embracing an open science approach, which facilitates independent verification and validation of reported impacts and performance levels achieved in ATM. This approach advocates for open access to scientific methods, data, analytical code, and methods, as well as open review of research analyses.

Engage 2 seeks academic input on aviation curricula modernization

Rome, January 17th 2024 – Engage 2 is reaching out to the academic community in the aviation field to gather insights on how curricula can be adapted to align with upcoming trends in ATM.

The survey, accessible here, seeks to understand the perspectives of academic institutions and faculty on how ATM curricula can be modernized to prepare students for the challenges and opportunities of the future. The collected data will be utilized to inform academic decisions and ensure that aviation education remains relevant in a rapidly evolving industry.

A closer collaboration between academia and industry is essential for ensuring that the next generation of ATM professionals is equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to meet the demands of the future. This survey is a crucial step in gathering valuable input from the academic community to guide our ongoing efforts to modernize aviation curricula.

The survey comprises a series of questions designed to assess the current state of ATM curricula, identify areas for improvement, and explore potential strategies for modernization. Responses will be kept confidential and aggregated to preserve anonymity.
Engage 2 encourages all members of the academic community to participate in this survey to contribute to the advancement of aviation education and the future of ATM. Engage 2 at SESAR Innovation Days 2023

Rome, December 5th 2023 – In a remarkable meeting of Europe’s top Air Traffic Management (ATM) and aviation researchers, the SESAR Innovation Days 2023 in Seville saw the significant contributions from the Engage 2 project. The event, held from 27 to 30 November, was a hub of innovative ideas and groundbreaking research in the field.

Engage 2 marked its presence both in the poster exhibit and through a focused presentation by the Project Coordinator, Micol Biscotto, on the event’s final day. Micol Biscotto’s presentation shed light on Engage 2’s efforts in nurturing knowledge about future trends and fostering collaboration between academia and industry. At the SIDs Engage 2 also launched a survey to gather feedback on “The Impact of ATM Innovation on Academic Programmes” and presented the first four Engage 2 Thematic challenges selected by the Awards Board. The challenges are key areas of interest for upcoming Engage 2 initiatives, such as the call for PhDs and the call for Catalyst funding Projects.

SIDs 2023 Highlights

The SESAR Innovation Days, hosted by the University of Seville and supported by leading entities like SESAR 3 JU, ENAIRE, Indra, Ryanair, and AENA, featured an impressive array of 66 posters and 42 papers. These covered a broad spectrum of topics including safety and resilience prediction, climate-optimised trajectories, drone traffic management, and airport operations. The conference saw thought-provoking addresses by key figures like Andreas Boschen from SESAR 3 JU, Maria Luz de Mateo from ENAIRE, and Andrea Gentili from the European Commission. They emphasized the need for innovative thinking to address challenges like airspace capacity and climate change, and the importance of aligning research with policy needs. The event also celebrated upcoming talents through the SESAR Young Scientist Award, showcasing exceptional research by students and PhD candidates in aviation and ATM.

At the forefront of these announcements is the unveiling of the thematic challenges gathered during the call closed at the end of October. These challenges reflect the current pressing issues in the ATM field and the innovative solutions proposed by professionals and researchers worldwide. Engage 2 lights up SESAR Annual Conference 2023 with innovative vision for future ATM

Rome, 13 October 2023 – The SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking Annual Conference, a key event in aviation’s digital transformation, marked a central point for industry leaders committed to modernising air traffic management (ATM) and aligning it with EU climate goals. The gathering in Brussels, at the Sheraton Hotel in Brussels Airport, has been the occasion to meet relevant stakeholders and people working on other EU projects who could become active players in Engage 2 activities.

Engage 2 thrived in the conducive environment of the exhibit, fostering invaluable networking opportunities with other innovative projects. Such meetings are essential for catalysing collaboration and ushering in a new era of ATM improvements contributing towards a more efficient European airspace.

Crucially, the conference served as a platform for generating significant interest in Engage 2’s ongoing Thematic Challenge call, which remains open until October 31st, 2023. Stakeholders are called upon to propose challenges in the field of ATM that are not covered by SESAR projects yet.

Additionally, the consortium behind Engage 2 took the opportunity to circulate the questionnaire aimed at gathering insight into the major technological challenges faced in the realm of ATM. The information collected will provide valuable feedback and guide the consortium’s future strategies.

Engage 2’s vision is to bridge the ever-growing gap between industry and academia. As we speed into the digital age, where challenges are as frequent as the innovations to face them, there’s a distinct need for the next wave of aviation professionals to be well-equipped. Rome – 2nd October 2023 – SESAR has named Engage 2 Project of the Month for October 2023 recognising Engage 2 role in shaping the future of ATM research and innovation.

In its periodic e-News, SESAR has presented Engage 2 as the project that will foster knowledge transfer between academia and industry within the ATM sector thanks to all the activities that will be implemented in the coming four years. Read the e-news.

The Engage 2 Wiki has been highlighted as the initiative that will ensure a streamlined flow of information and resources across the field, designed to serve as a comprehensive repository of ATM research, featuring data from various completed SESAR projects.

Moreover, the support to SESAR initiatives like the SESAR Innovation Days and the Digital Academy was emphasised by referring to the achievement of Engage 2 predecessor, Engage KTN.
